online discussion : oneness of literature

Thinking Activity : oneness of literature

The literature is connected with each other. Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Literature is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific work but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination, poetry, drama, fiction and non fiction.

Eliot's view :

His work Tradition and individual talent, it's reflected to maximum influence of writer's past and experiences.
He said that no poets, artist of any art and has complete meaning alone, his appreciation is the application of his relationship with dead poets.

Northrop Fray view :

His theory of Archetypal criticism that shows whole literature has oneness of it's existence and all share commonly.
'The West Land' by T.S.Eliot and Anton Chekhov's short story 'A Joke' we also find oneness of literature.

In The West Land we find this lines are connected with Chekhov's short story.

'And when we were children
Staying at the archduke's
                            My cousin's he
Took me out on a sled and
I was frightened. He said Marie
Marie hold on tight and
Down we went.
           In the mountains there
           You feel free.'

This stanza shows the girl Marie's feeling like nostalgic and her experience for going to the mountain over the sled. She felt afraid but she got courage from his cousin. He gives her strength and she feels free.

A joke by Anton Chekhov

This story has a same theme and character only the name is changed here the girl name is Nadiya not Marine. But it has also a same theme of sexual perversion. In this story Nadiya feels fear to go down over mountain on the sled. At that time her friend coming with her. He trys to joke with her when they going down at the middle he tells her  words that :  I Love you Nadia ". So by hearing these word she feels strange. She can't believe that whether it is real or illusion. She goes many times with her friend for confirmation about this words. At every time her friend tells her this words for him it is just a joke not anything else. But Nadiya is connecting with these words. She can't decide that whether air or her friend speeking this words. So for deciding that once she goes alone for costing. At that time she is so much frightend that she can't feeling anything. She thinks that it happens because she is frightend at that time. She can't forgot that experience during her life.

Sexual perversion

In the poem we find that sexual perversion as theme. This theme shows lustful desire and attraction. But Chekhov's short story have not found any kind of lust desire and attrection of man. At the end of story she married with other man still love her. This situation describe the reality of human relationship and selfless love.
So this type of comparison we find in both literary genre and shows oneness in it.

Thinking Activity : The Waste land by T. S. Eliot

1) What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'? Do you think that Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzche's views? or Has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling mytho-historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

Eliot is believer of of God. He use so many myth in the poem. At some point this poem is backward looking because Eliot take help to Upanishads, Buddhism, religion and Christian idea are center for gating answer. Friedrich Nietzsche is idea about 'super human' and also progressive at forward looking to society. He give say something 'superman', means a person with extraordinary abilities. he says that to contemporary crisis  in faith of culture and religious them and other side Eliot idea about forward to looks that to situation between self- center both are right but I say that human means self(soul) is center but never ignore moralities, culture because wherever in this world human are never leave this idea.

2) Prior to the speech, Gustaf Hellström of the Swedish Academy made these remarks:

What are your views regarding these comments? Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy and satisfied life? or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural tradition'?

The waste land poem is depends on sexual perversion and spiritual drought. Freud concept that people always act accord to their mind also think into the right direction. So they do good act. Eliot believes in repression of desires which will help to preserve our culture. Freud believes in natural instincts.

3) Write about allusions to the Indian thoughts in 'The Waste Land'. (Where, How and Why are the Indian thoughts referred?)

There are many examples of Hindu influences on the "Wasteland." Some of these allusions are clear, such as the Hindu story footnoted in Part V. or the repetition of "shantih" at the poem's close. An image of death-in-life is first presented in the epigraph with the Sybil, a character who illustrates a zombie-like existence through own life, yet wishing only to die.The other side of this, life-in-death, is illustrated by the first line of the poem which asserts that, “April is the cruellest month.” April is so cruel because it is the month of rebirth, and it serves as a reminder that in the "Wasteland" what is dead does not always stay dead.  He uses many references like Buddhism, Christianity, Indian myths and many more for the solution of sexual perversion and spiritual degradation prevalent at that time in European civilization. And in the last part of the waste land Eliot use  Gods, humans, and demons.
Each of these groups asks the Creator to instruct them and to each he replies "DA". The gods interpret this as "damyata" or “control,” the humans as "datta", or “give,” and the demons as "dayadhvam", or “sympathize.” The story ends with the repeating of "da da da" as a reminder to practice self-control, giving, and compassion.

Movie review of : The Reluctant Fundamentalist

‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ movie by Meera Nair. Changez leading main role in this movie. This movie reflects relationship between Pakistan and America. As we know that America is a powerful nation comparing Pakistan. As we know in postcolonial theory one nation tries to control another nation. So as we know that America control Pakistan. And in this movie main character ‘Changez’ suffer a lot because he is from Pakistan. In America he is powerful and intelligent person rather than other person in his office, yet he faces many difficulties in America. For example Changez suffer because of his outlook and his body checks up at airport, and it is insulting for any person to be naked and giving the proof that he is not terrorist. So we can see power of west on east in this movie.

Postcolonial point of view :

Changez khan felt racism in America when he was insulted by the people. Then he felt that that is good for him that he serves for his own country rather than other.
People of America had mentality that terrorism spread over the world by  the m Muslims. This is post  also a post colonial thing.

Movie is also attack on American Capitalism: That how workers have to loose their jobs because of Capitalization.
The line spoken by Changez is very significant that ' All matters cannot be solved only by money'

Movie review of 'Midnight's children '

On 9th September 2018 we had film screening of the two films in our department. First one was "Midnight's children " and second one was " The Reluctant Fundamentalist". Midnight's children is written by Salman Rushdie and directed by deepa mehta And The Reluctant  Fundamentalist is written by Mohsin hamid and directed by Mira nair.

“Midnight's Children” one of the most commended novel by Salman Rushdie. It is a story of the rich, the poor and the mistaken.

The film opens in Kashmir as Saleem's maternal grandfather Aadam Aziz, who's a doctor The story centers on two boys born in bombay at midnight. which is the moment India demolish British rule. The story of Saleem Sinai, raised as the businessman's son, becomes a journey of self discovery for young Saleem. He gets to know Shiva, for whom he was swapped, because Shiva lives in his neighborhood. Shiva also starts appearing in Saleem's ghostly visitations by Midnight's Children, the group connected by the supernatural relationship of being born at the instant of India's independence, whom Saleem has the power to summon. Saleem is sent away to Karachi to live with his maternal aunt Emerald and her Army officer husband Zulfikar.

The three meet again as adults in the film's last act when Shiva, now a ruthless military commander, and Saleem, following six years of amnesia, become involved with the beautiful adult witch, Parvati against the background of Indira Gandhi's brutal emergency measures. Visually, the film include scenes of war, liberation, celebration, corruption, romance and mourning all beautifully captured.

# postcolonial point of view:

1. Magic realism

One such postcolonial writer is Salman Rushdie, who used magic realism in Midnight’s Children extensively. His fusion of fantasy and reality looks typically Indian because the characters strewn in present social and political disorder likewise own the power of epic heroes. As a novelist from a country with a colonial legacy, Rushdie is also concerned and involved with the concept of nation in his magic realist writing, which was motivated by (1) the necessity to cast away what Coleridge called the film of recent past’ familiarity through the use of tabulation and (2) the dilemma of presenting impossible events.

2. Hybridity

Hybridity is the mixture of two cultures , religious and races . It can be social , political, linguistic, religious etc. It not necessarily peaceful mixture.
The novel's social and cultural hybridization, illustrated through the multitude of differing characters. These cultural and religious division clearly highlighted through Saleem's relationship with Shiva and Parvati.  Saleem's relationship with Shiva remains complicated because of the nature of their birth and religion. And from those characters we can say that religious and cultural Hybridity present in India.  These three names are also connected with Hindu mythology.

            1. Parvati
            2. Shiva
            3. Saleem

Some bollywood  movies like " Amar Akbar Anthony " ," Gadar ek prem katha "  are shows the theme of Hybridity .
